RIGA - Latvian Chief of Defense Lieutenant General Raimonds Graube has decided to step down from his position before the expiration of his term.

The National Security Council on Tuesday accepted the letter of resignation that Graube had submitted to Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis, requesting permission to leave the office of the defense chief early.

Graube is expected to continue serving as the Latvian chief of defense until the parliament approves his successor.

President Raimonds Vejonis declined to comment on Graube’s decision to retire early.

Previously Graube served as the defense chief from 1999 to 2003 and from 2010 to 2014 when he was re-appointed for another four-year term expiring in 2018.

The Latvian chief of defense is appointed for a term of four years.
