VILNIUS - King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark will pay a state visit to Lithuania at the end of January, the presidential office announced on Friday, adding that the Danish royal family will visit the country at the invitation of President Gitanas Nauseda.

The detailed program of the visit, which will take place on January 28-29, will be announced later, the office said.

Frederik X became king in January 2024, when his mother Margrethe II abdicated after 52 years of reign due to health problems.

The visit comes as US President Donald Trump threatens to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.

As reported by BNS, the American president reiterated on Sunday that Greenland, a territory rich in minerals vital to the technology industry, should become part of the US as it is necessary for US national security.

For her part, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen insisted that any US attack on a NATO ally would mean the end of 80 years of transatlantic security ties.

Nauseda has said that the people of Greenland should decide its fate. Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene has urged the US not to escalate the issue of the island's annexation.
