BRUSSELS - Europe must increase its defense efforts and play a larger role within NATO, as U.S. President Donald Trump has shaken transatlantic relations to their foundations, said the European Union's foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Wednesday.
"This shift has been ongoing for some time. It is structural, not temporary. This means that Europe must increase its contribution - no great power in history has ever delegated its survival to others and survived," Kallas said at a defense conference in Brussels.
She said that Washington remains an important partner, but stressed that as the U.S. focus shifts, NATO must "become more European to maintain its strength."
