VILNIUS - International law must be respected with regard to Greenland, Asta Skaisgiryte, chief foreign policy advisor to Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, says.
She made this statement after US President Donald Trump reiterated last week that the autonomous territory of Greenland, which belongs to Denmark, should become part of the United States.
"We definitely believe that international law must be respected and that Greenland, although autonomous at present, is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and that should be the end of the matter," Skaisgiryte told the Ziniu Radijas news radio on Tuesday, adding that the Americans can be present in Greenland in other ways, for example, through investment.
"In that sense, the Americans can be present in Greenland in other ways, probably more profitable than using, say, simple military force," the advisor said.
European countries have expressed solidarity with Denmark in recent days and called on the US to refrain from threats.
