VILNIUS - Lithuania has nominated former Finance Minister Rimantas Sadzius as vice president and member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank.
The Finance Ministry's proposal to nominate Sadzius, who has served as Lithuania's finance minister three times, has been approved by the government's European Union Commission, the ministry said on Tuesday.
"We once learned from other European countries, and now we are the ones who can share our knowledge and experience with others. I believe that my accumulated experience can be successfully used in the ECB's activities," Sadzius said in a statement.
Finance Minister Kristupas Vaitiekunas pointed out that until now, there have been no representatives from countries that joined the EU in 2004 and later on the ECB's board, adding that Sadzius' experience "is invaluable and worth using on a European scale."
Sadzius served as finance minister in 2007-2008, 2012-2016, and 2024-2025.
From 2016 to 2022, Sadzius was a member of the European Court of Auditors, specializing in EU banking and financial services, capital markets, and economic governance.
Eurozone countries can nominate candidates for the position of ECB vice president until January 9.
