EUR 747,577 worth of Latvian lats banknotes and coins exchanged for euros in 2025

RIGA - Last year, LVL 525,400 (EUR 747,577) worth of Latvian banknotes and coins were exchanged for euros at the Bank of Latvia, LETA was told at the central bank.

The money exchanged in 2025 included lats banknotes worth LVL 441,056 (EUR 628,056) and lats coins worth LVL 84,000 (EUR 119,521).

In 2025, over 2,000 lats exchange transactions were carried out at the Bank of Latvia's cash desks.

As at the end of December 2025, 40 percent of lats coins (worth EUR 41.3 million) and 96 percent of lats banknotes (EUR 1.342 billion) had been taken out of circulation.

At the end of December 2025, lats banknotes and coins worth LVL 81.8 million or EUR 116.391 million still had not been exchanged for euros. This includes 338.9 million lats coins weighing 777 tons.

Most of the lats coins not yet exchanged are of the smallest denominations - 238.3 million one-santim and two-santim coins. Meanwhile, 23.7 million one-lat coins have yet to be exchanged for euros.

As for banknotes, the largest number of banknotes not exchanged at the end of last year were the 5 lat and 20 lat notes - 1.7 million and 715,000 respectively.

Latvia gave up its national currency, the lats, and switched to euros on January 1, 2014.
