TALLINN - This year, Estonia is the coordinator of the Central and Eastern Europe and Baltic States (CEBS) group within the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
The coordinator role, which is a first for Estonia, provides greater visibility in discussing intellectual property issues at the international level, and increases Estonia's prestige and visibility.
Margus Viher, director general of the Estonian Patent Office, said cooperation with WIPO and coordinating the work of the CEBS group will allow Estonia to strengthen contacts with WIPO's 193 member states and become even more familiar with WIPO's work. Estonia will be able to better utilize the opportunities arising from its membership and thus support innovation and competitiveness growth.
The coordinator speaks on behalf of the group, prepares and communicates positions agreed upon by the members of the group, and relays information between the WIPO secretariat and other regional groups. Within the group, the coordinator's task is to reconcile differing opinions by offering compromises, including on politically sensitive issues.
Estonia will gain excellent experience in international relations in the field of intellectual property, which will help promote Estonia's international image as an innovative e-state and a modern intellectual property environment.
The work of the group will be managed by the permanent representation of Estonia in Geneva in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs and the Estonian Patent Office.
