From 16 to 27 September, the Rothko Museum in Daugavpils will host the Mark Rothko 2024 painting symposium, marking the forum’s twentieth instalment and welcoming artists from Poland, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, India and the United States.
Every September, Mark Rothko’s native Daugavpils commemorates his birthday with an international symposium, bringing together painters from different countries and continents into a vibrant and synergetic cross-cultural dialogue.
The Mark Rothko 2024 symposium features an exciting line-up of artists, including Jaye Alison Moscariello (USA), Tomasz Kopcewicz (Poland), Joanna Mankiewicz (Poland), Jaakov Blumas (Germany), Prajjwal Choudhury (India), Irena Paskali (Macedonia/Germany), Kristina Mažeikaitė (Lithuania), Vitalija Petraitytė (Lithuania), and Žanna Vērdiņa (Latvia).
Initially conceived as a plein air, the forum has since evolved into a fortnight-long symposium with a rich and stimulating programme. The events are designed to engage the resident artists and the wider artistic community, promising an exciting and enriching experience. Thus, at 3 p.m. on 20 September, art enthusiasts are welcome to a public artist presentation session, where the painters will present their creative portfolios and offer insights into their process. Additionally, at 3 p.m. on 24 September, Irena Paskali, representing Macedonia and Germany, will give an in-depth video-assisted open lecture about her method and inspirations. The symposium will conclude at 4 p.m. on 27 September with the opening of an exhibition displaying the works the artists created during their stay.
Admission to the presentations and the symposium exhibition opening is free of charge.
