This week, Tallink Silja Line is inviting people to learn more about the Baltic Sea and to look after it. Among other things, sea rescue excursions will take place in Tallinn Bay in collaboration with volunteer sea rescuers, there will be a themed quiz on board the ships, and Tallink Silja Line will also be present at the major Baltic Sea event Itämerifest in Helsinki. The Day is being celebrated in the countries bordering the Baltic Sea this year on Thursday, 27 August.
“For a major shipping company, protecting the Baltic Sea means day-to-day work and a commitment to reducing our environmental impact and complying with increasingly stringent international requirements. On the other hand, we also recognise our responsibility on a more personal level, as coastal peoples we must know how to behave safely on water and understand that the sea is more powerful than us. That is why we want to mark Baltic Sea Day this week primarily through practical activities, and we are doing so in close cooperation with many excellent partners on all shores,” said Meelis Kompus, Communications Director at AS Tallink Grupp.
In Estonia, the Baltic Sea Day programme includes sea rescue excursions, during which members of the Tallinn SAR will introduce maritime safety and the work of volunteer sea rescuers, and share practical knowledge on how to act in emergency situations. In collaboration with volunteer sea rescuers, a separate water safety training session was held for children of the Tallinn Children’s Home to equip them with practical skills for staying safe near the sea.
Throughout the week, passengers on Tallink ships can put their knowledge to the test in a Baltic Sea-themed quiz. In Helsinki, Tallink Silja Line is taking part in the Itämerifest, the largest community-involving Baltic Sea event in the city.
Tallink provides financial support for the activities of volunteer sea rescuers and contributes to improving the environment of the Baltic Sea. To this end, the company has a long-standing partnership with the John Nurminen Foundation, supporting projects aimed at raising public awareness of the fragile marine environment, reducing eutrophication in the Baltic Sea and improving the state of the marine environment.
