RIGA - Construction of a fence on the Latvian-Russian border has been completed, Valsts Nekustamie Ipasumi (VNI) state property manager informed LETA.

In total, about 280 kilometers of fencing have been built on the Latvian-Russian border, providing a physical barrier where it was technically needed.

Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis (New Unity) said that the installation of technical equipment continues at the border. "Our overarching goal is to create the most advanced border protection on the European Union's eastern border," the minister said.

Finance Minister Arvils Aseradens (New Unity) said that the completion of the fence on the Latvian-Russian border and simultaneously developed infrastructure strengthen the State Border Guard's capabilities.

In parallel with the construction of the fence, VNI will continue to work on infrastructure in the rest of the border strip, which will include patrol trails, footbridges, and other engineering solutions.

VNI also continues to coordinate the development of eastern border infrastructure on the Latvian-Belarusian border, where the project is progressing according to the approved timetable.

The construction of the security fence on the Latvian-Belarusian border was completed in July 2024.

The Latvian-Russian border is 283.6 kilometers long. In the summer of 2023, a special law transferred the management, implementation, and supervision of the construction of the fence and infrastructure of the eastern external border of the European Union (EU) to VNI.

VNI was established in 1996 and its sole owner is the Finance Ministry.
