VILNIUS - The Baltic states and Poland have backed Lithuania's proposal to turn to the United Nations for assistance in ensuring safe transportation of humanitarian aid for Ukrainian people, Lithuania's Ministry of Social Security and Labor said.

The ministers will sign a joint statement calling for action, and it will be handed over to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Geneva.

"Signing the joint document, the Baltic states and Poland once again confirm their assistance for Ukraine in the area of social and humanitarian aid," Social Security and Labor Minister Monika Navickiene was quoted as saying in the statement.

The joint statement also states that due to Russia's unprovoked mass invasion into democratic Ukraine, there's a need for urgent humanitarian aid and the protection of Ukrainian people.
