VILNIUS - The question of whether or not US actions in Venezuela violated international law is a complex one, but Lithuania is not sad about authoritarian Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro leaving the country, Asta Skaisgiryte, chief foreign policy advisor to Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, says.

"It is a complex issue in terms of international law, but the Venezuelan president is not someone we would be sad about," she told the Ziniu Radijas news radio on Tuesday.

She stated once again that Lithuania did not recognize Maduro as the legally elected president of Venezuela and that the Venezuelan people were not satisfied with the regime.

According to the advisor, it is now important to transfer power peacefully and hold a new presidential election in Venezuela.

Asked whether it was true that Lithuania and the EU did not dare to criticize the US because of the Americans' role as the main guarantor of security, Skaisgiryte replied that "at least today, we cannot imagine European security without the support of the United States."

"Perhaps someday we will reach a level of armament that will allow us to feel secure, but I repeat, today, without the United States, the European Union cannot feel secure," the presidential advisor said.

Skaisgiryte does not see any risk that the US's actions could encourage regimes hostile to the West to act in violation of international law, adding that this is already happening.

"No one will prevent aggressive, mostly dictatorial states from using certain methods; international law will not stop them," she said.
