RIGA - This year we must continue to work to strengthen national security, Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics told Latvian Television this morning.
Rinkevics mentioned the construction of the eastern border not only with Belarus, but also with Russia as one of the priorities.
The eastern border also needs to be strengthened in terms of military infrastructure, as a fence alone will not protect against a serious military threat. The fence is intended to prevent a hybrid threat.
This year, work is needed to put in place a civil protection system, the President stressed.
He also stressed the need to work towards higher financing for the interior affairs sector in 2025.
As for the work to be done this year, the President also did not rule out the possibility of coming up with some legislative initiatives himself, although he did not reveal which ones at the moment.
"I can only say that I will work within the framework of the three priorities that I once said in my inaugural address to the Saeima on the day I took office - security, education and also competitiveness," Rinkevics explained.
