RIGA - On Monday, Transport Minister Janis Vitenbergs (National Alliance) will met with Ukrainian Ambassador to Latvia Anatolii Kutsevol in order to seek opportunities to handle Ukrainian grain cargoes via Latvia, representatives of the Ministry of Transport informed LETA.

Vitenbergs noted that Latvia has free port capacities and local companies are ready to handle Ukrainian cargo.

"Small volumes are already being transported through Latvian ports, unfortunately only by road for the time being. In these circumstances, solutions must be found at the European level to ensure railway infrastructure capacity in Poland and Lithuania, as well as to remove bureaucratic barriers to streamline transport towards Latvia as much as possible," the Minister said.

During the meeting, the Minister will inform the Ambassador about the progress made so far by Latvian entrepreneurs in reducing Russia influence on both countries. The two sides will also discuss other joint activities to facilitate the handling of Ukrainian cargo through Latvia.
