TALLINN - In a phone call on Tuesday with Hungary's possible next foreign minister, Anita Orbán, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said he anticipates a renewed spirit in bilateral relations between Estonia and Hungary, as well as new momentum for cooperation within the European Union, following the recent elections in Hungary.
"The Hungarians gave a clear signal in the elections that they want change. We hope the new political situation will enable greater unity in Europe and allow us to move forward on issues important for the security, economic well-being, and influence of the EU, which have been stalled until now," Tsahkna said. "This primarily concerns supporting Ukraine, pressuring Russia through additional sanctions, and the enlargement of the EU."
The foreign minister also expressed his hope during the phone call that Hungary would once again move towards enforcing the principles of the rule of law.
"I expect that following the elections, it will be possible to deepen bilateral cooperation between Estonia and Hungary even further," Tsahkna said.
