RIGA - A tender has been announced in Latvia to pick a new chief of the Corruption Prevention Bureau (KNAB), according to a publication in the official gazette Latvijas Vestnesis.

The State Chancellery, which organizes the tender, has set March 30 as the deadline for applications.

On Tuesday, February 28, the Cabinet of Ministers approved two draft regulations necessary to announce a new tender to select the new KNAB chief.

In relation to the planned tender, the government approved a draft decree providing for organizing a public tender to pick the new KNAB chief and amendments to the rules regulating the new KNAB chief’s selection and assessment procedures. In accordance with the amended rules, the tender will take place in two rounds. In the first round, the commission will assess the applicants’ formal compliance with the requirements. In the second round, the remaining applicants will be judged by their qualification, work experience, and knowledge.

The commission assessing the applicants in the tender will include the prosecutor general, director of the Constitution Protection Bureau and the head of the Security Police, as well up to three representatives delegated by the Public Consultative Council in advisers’ capacity.

As reported, Saeima has passed legislative amendments easing the work experience requirement for candidates to the Corruption Prevention Bureau chief.

The requirement that eligible candidates must have at least a three-year experience of working in a senior position has now been lifted. Now the candidates for the Corruption Prevention Bureau’s chief will be considered eligible if they have appropriate work experience and experience of working in a senior post in the public administration or law enforcement.
