RIGA - The share of sorted waste in Riga increased last year, helping residents to save EUR 14 million, LETA learned from the Riga City Council.

In 2022, 29.2 percent of collected waste had been sorted, growing by 50 percent from 2020, when only 19.9 percent of waste had been sorted.

The share of sorted light packaging and glass has increased most. Residents of Riga have saved EUR 14 million in a year - this is the money residents would have paid if the waste had been not sorted and collected as common waste. the city council said.

The Riga municipality over the past years has carried out a number of measures to promote sorting of waste. Housing managers have to ensure containers for sorted waste next to multiapartment houses, while business representatives should ensure waste sorting options by shopping centers, fuel retail stations, etc.
