RIGA - The soldiers who died in a road accident during military training on Thursday was in the professional military service, Sandra Brale, press officer to the Commander of the National Armed Forces (NAF), confirmed to LETA.
The NAF is still withholding further information on the circumstances and location of the accident in the interests of the investigation.
As reported, a soldier of the NAF was fatally injured and died in a road traffic accident during a military training exercise on Thursday, the military informed LETA.
An ambulance of the Emergency Medical Service, as well as officers of the State Police and the Military Police were immediately called to the scene of the accident. The military training exercise was halted at the order of the NAF commander.
The NAF has launched a special and a service investigation into the accident.
The NAF would not provide further information on the circumstances and location of the accident in the interest of the investigation. However, the representatives of the military confirmed to LETA that the accident took place in the training area.
The NAF expressed its deepest condolences to the soldier's family, friends and service members. The soldier's family has been informed about the incident. The armed forces are providing all necessary support to the relatives of the deceased soldier, including psychological and spiritual support.
