Smiltens emphasizes to Chinese ambassador the halting of Russia's war against Ukraine

RIGA - It is essential to stop Russia in its war against Ukraine and to make Russia take responsibility for the crimes it committed in Ukraine, emphasized the Chairman of the Saeima, Edvards Smiltens (United List), today, during a meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Latvia Liang Jianquan in the parliament.

As LETA was informed by the Press Service of the Saeima, when discussing Russia's war in Ukraine, Smiltens emphasized that Latvia is trying to support Ukraine in all possible ways.

The Speaker of the Saeima also discussed the possibilities of strengthening economic cooperation with China.

Smiltens noted that new needs have arisen, including the need to transform the energy sector. The parties discussed the field of renewable energy as well as digitalization as a potential direction of cooperation between China and Latvia, as well as other European Union member states.

The Speaker of the Saeima and Jianquan also discussed the opportunities for Latvian companies to get involved in the Chinese market, as well as the current situation related to the spread of Covid-19. Turning to the dialogue between countries in the field of education, the ambassador expressed hope to strengthen cooperation between universities, as well as promote exchange programs among students.
