Russia and the West in the New Normal

  • 2018-05-23

The public discussion which is organized within the framework of the annual Riga Dialogue 2018 conference will aim to discuss the current political, economic and military relations between Russia and the West, as well as identify the potential “windows of opportunity”. In the light of the sanctions-countersanctions regime and decreasing economic interdependence, the need to identify the expectations, opportunities and the impediments to the West-Russia relationship at its current stage is increasingly important.

The panellists of the public discussion will address such questions as: What are the key features of the “New Normal” between the Russian and West relations? What are the most critical security and military trends in the Euro-Atlantic area, particularly in the Baltic and the Black Sea regions? As well as what are the expectations, opportunities, and impediments in the economic domain for EU - Russia relations? Finally, in practical terms, which developments should we expect in the field of energy and transport connections?

The event will take place in English.

The project is carried out by the Latvian Institute of International Affairs in cooperation with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Nuclear Threat Initiative, European Leadership Network, Russian International Affairs Council, Latvijas Dzelzceļš and Latvijas Dzelzceļa loģistika.
