RIGA - The majority of the Saeima today repeatedly rejected the call of the opposition United List to liquidate the Climate and Energy Ministry, according to the agenda of the meeting.

33 MPs voted in favor of the United List motion and 46 were against it.

The United List believes that there is a critical need to find additional means to increase the country's defense capacity, and therefore to reduce bureaucracy and administrative burdens. The United List politicians consider that the Climate and Energy Ministry is not useful.

Parliament lawmakers also rejected the proposal of the opposition Latvia First to merge the Climate and Energy Ministry with the Economics Ministry. This proposal was supported by 34 lawmakers, while 45 voted against it.

At the end of April, the United List already called for the liquidation of ministry, but the proposal was rejected by the majority of MPs.

The Climate and Energy Ministry became operational at the beginning of 2023, taking over energy policy, except for the maintenance and monitoring of oil reserves, from the Economics Ministry, and climate policy from the Environment Protection and Regional Development Ministry.

The Minister for Climate and Energy is Kaspars Melnis (Greens/Farmers).
