VILNIUS - Under the proposal drafted by the Ministry of Justice, EU citizens, who are not citizens of Lithuania, would be permitted to run for the European Parliament or local municipal councils as soon as this May.
Similar amendments were voted down last year despite official warnings from the EU.
“The draft law is aimed at ensuring that EU citizens, who are not citizens of Lithuania, but who have permanently and legally resided in Lithuania for at least five years, will not be subjected to a ban to join or establish political parties,” Justice Minister Juozas Bernatonis said at a Cabinet meeting.
