A former government worker has been attacked outside of his home in Riga, Latvia, police say.

Former Constitutional Protection Bureau Director Janis Kazocins was attacked with pepper spray by two men as he was walking home on Jan. 22.

Kazocins was rushed to hospital and has since been released. It's possible that the men had been following Kazocins before the incident, reports LETA.

Former defense minister Artis Pabriks, who worked with Kazocins, believes that this was not just a random mugging attempt. The State Police must establish the reasons behind the attack, said the former minister.

Kazocins' health is not in danger, whilst a criminal process has been launched.

Kazocins did not sustain any serious injuries in the attack. Therefore he has been released from the hospital, State Police spokesman Toms Sadovskis say.
