Police search Maxima office in connection with supermarket collapse

Latvian police have searched Maxima supermarket offices in connection with the investigation into the Riga supermarket tragedy, reports LETA

Maxima Latvija spokesman Janis Beseris said that a police search is currently being carried out at the company's administrative offices in Kekava Region near Riga. 

The company's employees are cooperating with police and giving them the necessary information. The company is also not making anymore comments on this matter at the moment.

Police are also currently carrying out a search at the offices of design and architectural company HND Grupa.

At least 54 people died and several dozen were injured as a "Maxima" supermarket in Riga's Zolitude neighborhood collapsed on Nov. 21.

Since the tragedy, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis announced Wednesday, Nov. 27 that he is resigning after taking political responsibility for the tragedy.

The Riga supermarket tragedy has become the largest loss of life since the restoration of independence in 1991.
