RIGA - A musical duo has dedicated a farewell song to the Latvian currency, attracting tens of thousands of views online. Over 70,00 people have already viewed  ‘Padies Latinam’ (Thank you Lat) on YouTube, performed by the acoustic duo Aarzemnieki.

Latvia is set to embrace the euro currency in January 2014, becoming the 18th country to do so.

The Latvian duo said they were surprised by the response the video had gotten. “It’s just two exhausted guys with a guitar. Unbelievable. Thank you, guys,” said Niks, one of the members.

“Joran and I have been genuinely touched by how Latvians have taken the song to heart. The lat is a huge part of their identity, and they - like us - will miss it hugely. We’re glad that ‘Paldies Latinam’ has struck such a positive chord.”
