Vilkaste also convicted in Riga City Council bribery affair

RIGA - The Supreme Court today convicted businesswoman Inara Vilkaste of complicity in bribing Riga City Council officials and sentenced her to two years in prison.

The sentence for Raimonds Janita, former senior official at the Riga City Council's City Development Department, was reduced and he was released in the courtroom. Janita was given a sentence of one year, eight months and 25 days - which is the time he has already served in jail.

Sentences were also shortened for the other two Riga City Council officials convicted in the case: former City Development Department's Director Vilnis Strams' sentence was cut to six years and six months, whereas the sentence for his deputy Peteris Strancis - to five years. Strams and Strancis are currently in prison.
