Lithuanian Seimas discusses referendum on new NPP

VILNIUS - On Tuesday, the Seimas approved of a draft resolution to call a consultative referendum on construction of a new NPP in Lithuania.

Referendum is proposed to be held at the same time as the elections to the Seimas will be taking place - on April 14, 2012.

The referendum would give an opportunity for the country's residents to express their opinion whether they are or are not in favour of building an NPP in Lithuania.

66 MPs voted in favor, 26 were against and 21 abstained while voting for the project. On May 10 the project will be discussed again during the Seimas plenary sitting.

Such an initiative is based on the fact that building an NPP is one of the issues concerning long-term financial commitments of the state and may also have influence to security of residing in Lithuania.
