Riga welfare program short 1 million lats

RIGA - The city of Riga needs more than 1 million lats to meet its welfare payments this year, national news agency LETA reported.

The Welfare Department of the Riga City Council reportedly said the number of welfare benefit recipients has increased 27 percent in the first six months of the year.

The city budget has requested an additional 1.08 million lats from the revised 2010 budget to meet its needs.
