Lembergs paid $7 million over 5 years - paper

VENTSPILS - Latvian-language daily newespaper Diena has reported that embattled Ventspils city mayor Aivars Lembergs paid out more than $7 million in illegal payments from 2001 to 2006.

Lembergs, who is considered one of the Latvian "oligarchs" and currently stands accused of a number of corruption charges, is one of the most controversial figures in the country.

The paper claimed that Lembergs made regular payments to politicians and political parties over the course of a number of years.
