RIGA - At an emergency meeting on Nov. 20, the Latvian government discussed making even deeper cuts to next year's budget.

The 2010 budget was already drastically slashed to bring it in line with IMF and EU requirements. The government is now looking at a further 55 million lats in cuts.

"The budget's revenue and expenditure sections must be real, so we do not have any unpleasant surprises next year," Latvian President Valdis Zatlers told journalists after a Nov. 19 meeting with the prime minister.
