Latvian president thanks Olympians
Latvian President Valdis Zatlers has thanked the members of the Olympic team for their “excellent” results in Beijing.Latvian athletes took home one gold, one silver and one bronze medal from the Games, giving the country one of the top medal-to-population ratios in the world.
"The Beijing Olympic cycle has closed and the London Olympic cycle is starting and I believe you are preparing for even better starts. My family and I had the delight of being with you in Beijing. We supported you as much as we could and enjoyed your results together with you,” the president said in a meeting with the athletes.
The president was criticized in the local media for his decision to stay in Beijing to watch the Games instead of joining the other Baltic presidents in a trip to Georgia after the fighting broke out.
