Foreigners not welcome

  • 2008-08-20
Often I read how Latvia is trying to encourage tourism. Encourage foreign investors.
These are just words. In reality, the Latvian government, local Governments and the general Latvian citizen do not like or want foreigners. The endless difficulties I have endured as a foreigner could write a very long book. Thus, it can be no surprise that I am told there is over 28 000 Latvians resident in Ireland opposed to 26 Irish residents in Latvia.

My very first concern. Why I am not allowed to own the land were I live and breed horses. My SIA (Ltd) Company is also not allowed to own the land. I must register a 99 year lease. Even though I purchased (leased) the land form an owner. Not state land. There is no bank that I know of who will offer any mortgage on leasehold, should I require one.

I am also confused why, as a European Union citizen, I require a residents permit to live in Latvia. As I am not fluent in Latvian, I am only granted a five year temporary residents permit.
Almost daily I encounter obstacles that appear unique to foreigners.  The legal system also needs serious attention.

If Latvia really want foreigners to come and invest here then actions should be [taken], not just words that are meaningless.

It is quite obvious that the general Latvians cannot see the real benefit of foreign investments. I cannot advocate Latvia to any interested persons, based on my personal experiences. A very sad situation.
