As previously reported, the three Baltic States in the recent NATO summit in Bucharest, voiced their support of Ukraine and Georgia joining NATO.

However, as Russia has shown hearty opposition to the proposal, Poland is now threatening to block EU-Russia discussions if Ukraine and Georgia are not invited to join NATO.

Discussions at the NATO summit last week ended with the decision that the two nations could join NATO one day, but rejected their plan for entry, the Membership Action Plan (MAP).

"Only not fully politically informed people would think that whathappened with the MAP  (for Ukraine and Georgia) had nothing to do withRussia"s opposition," Polish President Kaczynski told Reuters.

Kaczynski said the issue of NATO membership for countries that oncewere part of the Soviet Union was linked with a wider debate about the EU's strategic partnership with Russia.
Most EU nations are also members of the military alliance.
