Speak Lithuanian online at last!

Jan 09, 2008
By Mike Collier

VILNIUS -- If you’ve ever wanted to email someone in Lithuanian but didn’t want to spend hours slaving away over a dictionary, help is finally at hand.

Vytautas Magnus University has developed an online translation system capable of turning English into Lithuanian - though sadly, not vice versa. It will also translate whole web pages when a user supplies it with a valid url.

The university was partnered by PROMT, a leading provider of machine translation technologies, and work on the EU-funded project started in Dec. 2006.

The system is reportedly already being used by some 3,000 registered users and is performing up to 30,000 translations per day.

You can try the online translator for yourself at: http://vertimas.vdu.lt/twsas/Translations/TextForm.aspx
