RIGA - The prosecutor's office has brought charges against the killer of a 13-year old girl whose disappearance and death shocked Latvia in April.

No trial date has yet been confirmed as the investigation into the murder still ongoing, said prosecutor's office spokesman Andrejs Vasks.

The 43-year old suspect has been charged with aggravated rape and rape of an underage person. If found guilty, the man may face a life sentence or a jail term of 10 to 20 years for the crime.

The suspect has also been charged with murder of an underage person, a criminal offense that carries life imprisonment or a jail sentence of 10 to 20 years and police supervision for up to three years, plus confiscation of property.

Police have added another case to their investigation in which the man is suspected of raping a 15-year old girl at the beginning of this year, a representative of the Riga regional police told reporters.

Police detained the 43-year old man on suspicion of murdering the 13-year old Justine Legzdina near Riga this spring. He had already been detained in connection with the rape of the 15-year old girl and has a record of six previous convictions, including three for rape.

Justine left her home in Krimulda, near Riga, on April 14 and never returned. The girl's whereabouts remained unknown for a month before her body was found buried in a quarry not far from the place where she was last seen alive.
