The Port of Tallinn posted its best month ever in January, handling nearly 4 million tons of cargo, up 7.3 percent year-on-year. The record-breaking number was the result of an increase in dry bulk cargoes, the port said, which were up 74 percent to 1.1 million tons. Coal handling soared 64 percent year-on-year to 700,000 tons, while grain shipments totaled 200,400 tons, which compares with 4,500 tons in January 2006.

Bite Lietuva, a mobile operator, announced that it launched a service enabling customers to call users of Skype, an Internet person-to-person communication program. Previously, the capability was available only to those who owned 3G phones. "This is another convenient way of communication by mobile phone. We are the first in Lithuania and the Baltic countries to introduce this service," said Darius Montvila, the Bite Group's deputy CEO. Bite expects that there will be at least 5,000 active users of the new "mobile-to-Internet" service in Lithuania in a year's time. In the future, the company intends to make it possible for customers to communicate with users of other VoIP and instant messaging software, such as MSN Messenger and Google Talk.
