TALLINN - The Estonian government on Feb. 1 decided to relieve from office as of Feb. 5 Jaak Aaviksoo, Rector of Tartu University, who has decided to go into politics.
Last year Aaviksoo announced that he would go into politics. He ran for prime minister candidate of the Pro Patria and Res Publica Union and is No Two of the party's national list in the parliamentary elections.
Last week the University Council appointed Tonu Lehtsaar, professor of practical theology and former vice-rector for academic affairs, as acting rector of the university.
The Council decided that Lehtsaar would hold the post from Feb. 5 until June 30.
