Riga expected to bid for World Chess Olympics

AFTER hosting the world ice-hockey championships, Riga is hoping to attract a less physical sporting tournament 's chess.
Representatives from the Riga City Council will travel to Torino, Italy, on May 29 to attend the 77th congress of the World Chess Federation.
Vice-mayor Almers Ludviks is expected to make a bid for the city to host the World Chess Olympics in 2010.
The World Chess Olympics are held every two years, and attract around 1500 competitors from 150 countries.
The city's new multifunctional hall has been suggested as the best venue for the Olympics.
A successful bid would take more than just state funding 's sponsors and other supporters would also need to be found, the Latvian Chess Federation said.
