La La Land (2016) – in cinemas starting Friday, Dec. 16

La La Land is a 2016 American romantic musical comedy-drama film written and directed by Academy Award nominee Damien Chazelle and starring Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, John Legend, and Rosemarie DeWitt.
La La Land tells the story of Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress, and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.

The film’s title is a reference to both a nickname for the city of Los Angeles as well as a euphemism for a state of being out of touch with reality. A gorgeous homage to the golden age of Hollywood musicals in the 1950s, the film has the power to make audiences laugh, weep, and feel as if they can float on air. La La Land serves to remind us that movies can still be magical, and they can still provide a channel for us to see magic in the world around us.

La La Land had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Aug. 31, 2016. The film received rave reviews from critics, publications, and media-outlets particularly praising Damien Chazelle’s direction, Gosling and Stone’s performances, musical numbers, overall production, and the film’s revitalisation of the musical film genre.
