VILNIUS – Lithuanian Defense Minister Arvydas Anusauskas expects an agreement on rotational air defense in the Baltic states to be reached at the NATO ministerial meeting on Friday.

"The rotational air defense model proposed by the Baltic states will also be approved. That's the prospect," he told BNS from Brussels on Thursday.

"Countries will have to make their own decisions" on whether to take part in this model, Anusauskas added.

"We will need more bilateral meetings and contacts to achieve its implementation," he said.

Lithuania and the other Baltic countries have been pushing for some time for NATO to beef up its air defense capabilities in the region. This would allow replacing NATO's almost 20-year old air policing mission with an air defense mission.
