Lithuania's parliament speaker: Child money should be EUR 100-150

VILNIUS – Child money in Lithuania should be between 100 and 150 euros, says Parliamentary Speaker Viktoras Pranckietis.

"A minimum of one hundred euros, (…) possibly up to 150 euros. It would be very good under the current conditions," the parliamentary speaker told the Ziniu Radijas news radio on Wednesday morning.

In his words, the experience in Poland shows that higher benefits for children boosted the birth rate and curtailed alcohol consumption levels.

Dalia Venceviciene, adviser to the speaker, told BNS that 100-150 euros per every child raised in Lithuania could be paid to his parents until the child turns 18.

Pranckietis said the child money would cost the state budget 60-70 million euros annually.

Venceviciene noted the proposal would be discussed with the government and the ruling coalition.
