Lithuania remains dependent on imported energy

VILNIUS - Lithuania last year used more domestically generated energy, but remained dependent on imports, the country's statistics office said.  

Lithuania's energy dependence rate last year declined by 2.4 percent to 72.9 percent, but was still well above the EU average, which stood at 53.6 percent in 2016. 

Electricity demand in Lithuania last year rose by 2.6 percent to 12.9 billion kilowatt-hours. 

The country imported almost two-thirds of its electricity and produced around one-third (4.2 billion kWh). Its domestic power generation decreased by 1.8 percent, with renewable energy sources accounting for 60.6 percent of the total output. 

Final fuel and energy consumption last year grew by 4.9 percent, with 38.8 percent of energy used in the transport sector, 27.2 percent in hosu8eholds and 19.2 percent in industry.
