On Thursday, 9 October, Latvijas Banka will issue a 2 euro commemorative coin depicting the coat of arms of Sēlija, thus concluding the series of 2 euro commemorative coins, each honouring one of Latvia's five historical regions.

The special design 2 euro coin "Sēlija" will be available in circulation coin rolls (making its way into people's wallets and daily use), as well as in gift packaging and circulation coin sets. These numismatic products will be available for purchase exclusively on the website www.e-monetas.lv.

Latvia is composed of five historical regions of the Latvian nation: Vidzeme, Latgale, Kurzeme, Zemgale, and Sēlija. Sēlija was referenced in historical records as early as the 13th century, yet it was not until 2021, with its formal inclusion in the Law on Historical Regions of Latvia, that Sēlija was defined as a distinct cultural and historical region. The flag of Sēlija and the coat of arms of the historical region were approved in 2023. The coat of arms, which is featured on the reverse of the coin, has been crafted by heraldic artist Edgars Sims. Much like the lion of Kurzeme and the elk of Zemgale, the coat of arms of Sēlija incorporates elements of the visual identity of the Duchy of Kurzeme and Zemgale, a symbol that has been portrayed in two distinct forms over the centuries – both with an elk and with a stag. The State Heraldry Commission has developed the basic principles for designing the coat of arms of Sēlija, which, in contrast to other coats of arms, was crafted through a collaborative effort with the local communities, municipalities, and civic organisations of Sēlija. Embellishing it is a majestic animal, its crown adorned with elaborate antlers and its head held high – a silver stag set against a red background.

The mintage of the circulation quality "Sēlija" coin (available in rolls) is 400 000 pieces. These coins will be released into circulation just like the traditional 2 euro coins with the national symbols. Meanwhile, 7000 coins will be minted in Brilliant Uncirculated quality (available in gift packaging) and 6000 coins will be minted for the circulation coin sets. The price of the coin in gift packaging is 12.50 euro and that of a circulation coin set – 33 euro.

To make these coins available to as many interested parties as possible, the limit per purchase has been set at 4 gift packaging items, 1 roll, and 4 circulation coin sets.

The graphic design of the national side of the coin "Sēlija" has been created by artist Laimonis Šēnbergs, who is also the author of the previously issued 2 euro commemorative coins of this series. The author of the coin's common side is artist Luc Luycx, and the material and size of the coin are the same as those of other 2 euro circulation coins.

The national side of the coin depicts the coat of arms of Sēlija. The name of the country (LATVIJA) and the year of issue (2025) are also featured on the coin. The coin has been struck by UAB Lietuvos monetų kalykla in Lithuania.

The set of circulation coins "Sēlija" contains the euro circulation coins issued in 2025 whose nominal value ranges between 1 cent and 2 euro, also including the new 2 euro commemorative coin. "Sēlija" will be the only 2 euro commemorative coin issued by Latvijas Banka this year.

The coins will be available for purchase in gift packing, circulation coin rolls (25 coins per roll), and sets of circulation coins exclusively on the website www.e-monetas.lv, starting from 12.00 (noon) of 9 October. Mail delivery (circulation coin rolls – only on the territory of Latvia) or in-person pickup at the Cashier's Office of Latvijas Banka, Bezdelīgu iela 3, Riga, will be available. To streamline customer flow on the premises, the order pickup at the Cashier's Office of Latvijas Banka will be organised according to a coordinated schedule – each customer will be notified of the date when the order becomes available for pickup.

Each year, every euro area country is entitled to issue two 2 euro commemorative coins of special design, as well as one more commemorative coin within a joint programme of several euro area countries provided that such a programme is organised.

Latvijas Banka continues the tradition of minting circulation coins of special design in Latvia. Euro commemorative coins are legal tender in the Republic of Latvia and other euro area countries.
