May 4, 2016, sees Latvia mark its 26th anniversary of independence from the Soviet Union.

A large number of commemorative events will take place in the capital, Riga, and across a number of other cities and towns across the country.

The programme of events in Riga opened with an ecumenical service in Riga Cathedral. A school brass band performance will perform at 11 a.m. at the Freedom Monument.

Traditionally, state officials will participate in a flower laying ceremony at the Freedom Monument, and a flower carpet will be created by residents at the monument.

The traditional Armed Forces' parade will take place in Jelgava.

In Riga, a special stage has been built at the Dome Square for various performances, from symphony music, ethnorock, traditional dance, and other performances.

Various events for families with children will be organised in Vermanes Park.

Commemorative events will take place in neighborhoods of Riga as well, at cultural centres in Ziemelblazma, Imanta, Ilguciems and others.

On May 4, 1990, the Supreme Council of Soviet Latvia passed the declaration "On the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia", re-instituting the Latvian Constitution of 1922.

Latvia had been part of the USSR for five decades.
