RIGA - During Foreign Minister Krisjanis Karins' (New Unity) meeting with the visiting European Parliament President Roberta Metsola in Riga on Friday, the two officials called on Latvia's citizens to take part in shaping the future of the European Union by participating in the upcoming EP elections.

During the meeting, Karins thanked the EP President for her strong support for Ukraine and its aspirations of integration into the EU, as the Foreign Ministry informed LETA.

Referring to the historic decision by the European Council of December 14, 2023 on the opening of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, the officials agreed that concrete steps should be taken as soon as possible to approve the framework for accession negotiations and to convene an Intergovernmental Conference.

The officials also discussed preparations for the election to the EP, which will be held in Latvia on June 8.

Metsola is making working visits to the EU member states, including Latvia, to call on audiences, especially young people, to actively exercise their democratic rights of participation in the election and get involved in shaping the EU's future.
