RIGA - The first new electric buses of Rigas Satiksme public transport company have departed for Riga from Poland where they were manufactured, LETA was informed by the company.

The first five electric buses will arrive in Riga next week.

Before the buses start running in Riga, they will be thoroughly tested, as Rigas Satiksme CEO Dzineta Innusa told LETA.

The new buses are expected to start running on routes in Riga already this year.

As reported, Polish company Solaris Bus & Coach Sp. z.o.o. won a tender to supply 52 electric buses and their spare parts to Rigas Satiksme.

The maximum price of the purchase was set at EUR 34.3 million, excluding value added tax (VAT), and the supply agreement was concluded for a period of five years, excluding the guarantee.

The winner of the tender is to deliver the first 35 electric buses for EUR 23.1 million, excluding VAT. That purchase will be supported by an EUR 18.2 million co-funding from the European Union's Cohesion Fund.

Solaris is one of Europe's leading manufacturers of buses and trolleybuses, according to information on the company's website.
