TALLINN - This week, Estonian Minister of Defense Hanno Pevkur discussed NATO's eastern flank and bilateral cooperation at Ämari air base with United States Army Europe and Africa chief, Gen. Christopher Donahue, and a Senate delegation led by Senate majority leader, Republican John Thune.
"We were able to express to the Senate delegation and Gen. Donahue our gratitude for keeping US forces in the Baltics, which is crucial for the security of the entire region, particularly from a deterrence perspective. HIMARS training, the presence of various units, and joint exercises clearly demonstrate the importance of US forces in the region," Pevkur said.
"Estonia has in recent years significantly increased its defense contributions, as the current security situation demands from all the allies. We have done a lot on our side and have encouraged other allies to increase defense spending and support Ukraine. Estonia's contributions are tangible, and our efforts are recognized even among the largest allies, the Americans, as confirmed by the meetings at Ämari," the defense minister added.
The US Senate delegation visiting Estonia included Senate majority leader John Thune, as well as Jim Banks, John Curtis, David McCormick, Bernie Moreno, and Jon Husted.
Donahue assumed command of Allied Land Command and US Army Europe and Africa in December 2024.
