Estonian-Dutch deep-tech startup Spiral Hydrogen raises €2.7M to build green hydrogen pilot in Rotterdam

Delft, Netherlands – April 30, 2026 – Estonian-Dutch deep-tech startup Spiral Hydrogen, pioneering centrifugal bubble-free electrolysis, has raised €2.7 million in pre-seed funding. The round was backed by leading Nordic and European investors byFounders, Norrsken Evolve and Superangel, together with €0.7 million in grants.

Spiral Hydrogen founder and CEO Juri Volodin said the company will use the funding to take its technology from the lab to pilot deployment, building a centrifugal bubble-free electrolyzer pilot in Rotterdam. “Our technology solves one of the industry’s most stubborn problems, gas bubbles, and unlocks efficiencies that finally allow the hydrogen economy to decarbonise profitably. The pilot in Rotterdam is the next critical step towards commercial scale,” said Volodin.

The bubble-free electrolyzer system will be built in the Port of Rotterdam in partnership with SwitcH2, a company specialising in offshore ammonia solutions. The pilot electrolyzer marks a major milestone for green hydrogen production, bringing Spiral Hydrogen’s lab-validated technology into a real-world industrial conditions.

Volodin explained that current electrolyzers lose up to 30% of input energy because gas bubbles form on the electrodes, blocking active reaction sites and limiting system efficiency. “Spiral Hydrogen’s proprietary architecture eliminates bubble formation entirely: gases are routed directly through the porous electrode into a dedicated gas channel,” he said.

The result is a leap in efficiency to over 90%, dramatically lowering the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) and making green hydrogen cheaper than fossil-based alternatives for the first time.
