TALLINN - The Supreme Court of Estonia, seated in the southern city of Tartu, is hosting representatives of the constitutional courts of Latvia and Lithuania until Thursday to discuss matters related to the balance between national constitutions and the law of the European Union, and  constitutional guarantees for judges against dismissal.

In addition, at the annual meeting, the constitutional courts of the three countries present to each other the issues currently under discussion, the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Estonia, Villu Kove, said.

According to the chief justice, such regular meetings help to keep abreast of the most important constitutional disputes in neighboring countries, exchange experiences and discuss possible common ground in resolving cases.

"Among other things, it provides an opportunity to be prepared in advance to a certain extent to deal with issues that have arisen in one country but may also come up in another," the head of the Supreme Court of Estonia noted.
