RIGA - Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) could next week approve a new mechanism to support the European Union's Western Balkan partners and a EUR 5.8 billion increase in the EU budget for 2024, mainly to support Ukraine, Janis Krastins, EP press secretary in Latvia, told LETA.

The EUR 5.8 billion increase in the current budget was needed to make funds available this year from the delayed but currently adopted mid-term review of the EU's long-term budget.

EUR 4.8 billion has been allocated to Ukraine through the newly created Ukraine Support Facility.
